When we think of exercise, most of us probably think that means joining a gym and working out hard and sweating like crazy! Most would relate an exhaustive workout to a job well done. For some people this is perfect for them as it alleviates stress, takes their mind off their issues and they detox their body as they sweat. This group of people thrive on this feeling of exhaustion and are excited to work out again. They carry their workout bag in their vehicle so they can stop at the gym either before or after work, at least 3 times a week. They feel they have accomplished their goal of staying fit and healthy.

In my experience through the years, I have tried many different types of exercise. I have joined the YWCA and worked hard as I brought my body to the sweating point. Knowing this is what many people do, I wanted to give it a try. For me, I did not care for this type of strenuous exercise! When I was finished my workout, I was exhausted and could hardly breathe! Why was I putting myself through this? For me, I knew this was not the type of exercise I would make a part of my life. I kept searching. I have always loved to walk and knew that walking would always be a part of my routine, but I needed something else as well.

Then I came across Yoga when a friend invited me to a group practice. I was excited to try Yoga and I was thrilled with how I felt during and especially after the practice was done. Yoga is a gentle exercise that involves stretching your body into different poses, incorporating all different muscle groups and deep breathing. Since my life at the time was very hectic as I was raising 4 growing boys, and I was in an unhappy marriage, this Yoga really took me to a different place! While doing these stretches, I focused solely on me, being sure to do my deep breathing, and holding the pose for as long as I could. My body was thanking me for putting it to use and for stretching my legs especially as they were quite stiff. My body was also thanking me for bringing it peace and clarity, with awareness on comfort and breathing. At the end of this practice, we were asked to lie down and just let the body relax. I was amazed at how good I felt and how clear my mind was! I thanked my body for its strength and for helping me move throughout my day. This was definitely the practice for me! I am pleased to say that I have continued with Yoga and practice it several times a week.

My next adventure is to try Tai-Chi. From what I know, Tai-Chi is a constantly moving and flowing exercise. It is also gentle on the body, and it helps you to bring your awareness to your body, instead of to the insesssant mind chatter that we all have. When you bring awareness to your body, and focus on your breath, your body responds very well. Your mind becomes clear and focused on positive things, which is a great way to start your day. Here is the official explanation of Tai-Chi:

"Tai Chi is a type of martial art very well known for its defense techniques and health benefits. The martial art has evolved over the years into an effective means of alleviating stress and anxiety. It has been considered to be a form of 'meditation in motion' which promotes serenity and inner peace."

Doesn't that sound wonderful? I am excited to give that a try, hopefully today. There are many videos out there on Tai-Chi and I am sure many books as well. Youtube has much information about Tai-Chi as well as videos you can learn from. As with all exercise routines, take it slow and listen to your body. If you are tired or too sore, then slow down or stop your exercise. Take a break and a drink of water to help your muscles relax. When you are ready, start again. I am going to start with 15 minutes of Tai-Chi. Since I already do Yoga, this will be easy for me. I will let you know how it goes.

There is one more type of exercise that I feel is very important, and that is rebounding. Rebounding is jumping on a mini trampoline. This is an indoor exercise and is great for increasing blood flow and oxygen through the body. It also helps to eliminate toxins that are stuck in the lymph glands. When your body moves, everything flows the way it needs to. Leading a sedentary life, however, stops your body from proper blood and oxygen flow and can create many health issues. Give rebounding a try! It is fun and easy! Just put on some upbeat music and start jumping! Your body will do the rest.

As with any exercise routine, please drink plenty of water as our body is mostly water and we need to stay hydrated so our body works correctly. You can also drink coconut water after a workout as it helps to hydrate the body and also balances any electrolytes you

loose through sweating. Workout until you are tired, then stop. Take it easy on yourself and do not beat yourself up because you SHOULD have been able to do more or work out longer. Listening to your body is key. So turn on some music, or a workout video, and get moving! Your body, and your mind, will definitely thank you!
